LHA (Beta-Lipohydroxy Acid) in The Treatment of Acne

Beta-lipohydroxy acid (LHA) is an innovative derivative of salicylic acid, an exfoliating agent commonly used to help unblock pores in the management of acne.

LHA works in a manner similar to salicylic acid in the treatment of acne. It possesses potent comedolytic (ability to unblock pores). And in a study conducted by La Roche Posay, it was shown to decrease the bacterial concentration inside the follicles (area below the pore).

LHA’s action is thought to work in two ways:

  1. Break up particles that block the pores
  2. Impair the ability of bacteria to adhere to material inside the follicles.

These actions assist in the management of uncomplicated acne.

When combined in products that include salicylic acid, the LHA/salicylic acid combination is more effective than salicylic acid alone.

La Roche Posay’s Effaclar range has been specifically designed to address the needs of patients with acne. Available as cleansers, moisturizers and blemish treatments, the patented LHA technology combined with salicylic acid may be found in the following Effaclar skin care formulations:

La Roche Posay Effaclar K Daily Renewal – exfoliates and unclogs pores
La Roche Posay Effaclar AI – targeted breakout correction.
