How To Tan Safely: 4 Things To Consider

As we head into the heat of the summer, many of us want to know how to tan safely.

You probably already know that there really isn’t a way to tan safely, but you may still may want to sport a glow. This is hardly surprising as historically tans tend to be associated with health and wealth. Despite this, keep in mind that a tan is indicative of sun damage, no matter how much you may pretend it isn’t.

If you’re still bound and determined to get a tan, here are 4 things to consider:

  1.  Understand that tanning is the result of melanogenesis (the production of melanin), which is stimulated by exposure to UV rays. In addition to stimulating melanin,  UV rays also cause the production of thymine dimers, which can alter DNA and are thought to be one of the primary causes of melanomas.
  2. Wear sunscreen daily, year round. Sunscreen can help to minimize some of the damage caused by UV rays by blocking their effects on skin. We stock a wide range of effective UVA and UVB blocking sunscreens including Anthelios sunscreens at our online store.
  3. Add in an antioxidant. Antioxidants protect skin in ways that sunscreen can’t – they fight free radical damage and can help to boost the protection afforded by your sunscreen. A product like apothekari vitamin c/e and ferulic acid should be used daily, in conjunction with your sunscreen.
  4. Consider a self tanning product. Self tanners have come a long way. One like La Roche Posay Autohelios  will deliver a natural looking tan and leave skin feeling soft and smooth.
