If you have a tendency towards ashy or grey skin, you’re not alone. Ashy skin is caused by dry skin and although anyone can end up with it, it tends to be more noticeable on individuals with dark or olive complexions because it is such a contrast to the natural skin tone.

Skin that is dry and lacking in moisture may appear ashy or grey. Remedy the problem by following these 3 tips:

  1. Exfoliate. Regular exfoliation helps to remove the outer layer of dead, dry skin cells that can result in ashy, grey skin. Skin becomes smoother and softer. Products containing alpha hydroxy acids such as glycolic acid or lactic acid work wonders by dissolving away dead skin cells. Scrubs can help too. Choose from a range of treatments including Epilyt Lotion, Lac-Hydrin or M2 HP Skin Refinish. View the full selection here.
  2. Moisturize. If you have a tendency towards dry skin, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. You cannot overdo it. Opt for a product that contains emollients such as glycerine and oils. Moisturizers help in two ways – to lock moisture in and protect skin from the external environment. We carry many effective formulations including La Roche Posay Iso Urea  which helps to restore the skin’s protective barrier and hydrate as well, Linacare Creams and Impruv Cream. For best results in preventing grey or ashy skin, apply moisturizers while skin is slightly damp.
  3. Gentle care. Ashy, grey skin requires special care in addition to the above:
    a. Bathe in warm and not hot water to prevent a further drying effect.
    b. Use gentle cleansers, avoiding alcohol containing products where possible.
    c. Be cautious around air conditioners, dehumidifiers and dry climates, which can aggravate your condition.

Follow dry skin care tips and you’ll minimize the appearance of ashy skin. Read more here.
