Strawberries In Your Sunscreen?

Strawberries and cream are a popular and delicious summertime treat. Beyond the taste of this well paired combo, new research has shown that strawberry extract provides protection against ultraviolet (UV) rays and reduces skin damage from over exposure to the sun.

In a recent study, strawberry extract was shown to protect skin damage caused by UV rays. It also increased cell survival and decreased DNA damage compared to unprotected cells.

It’s thought that strawberry’s protective effect comes from anthocyanins, pigments which give strawberry leaves, flowers and fruit their red colour. Anthocyanins have important anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-tumour properties. The findings are published in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry.
