Tanning Oils: Remember Them?

When I was a teenager, for many of my friends, summers meant a lot of lazing in the sun, getting as dark as possible. Being naturally dark skinned, I didn’t quite understand the appeal. But I didn’t want to get left out so I’d always join in. And while I lay in the sun wondering just what I was doing, another activity was going on – the application of tanning oil. Although infused with irresistible tropical scents, something about slathering myself in oily liquid, ready to be cooked by the sun, didn’t seem like such a good plan and I always abstained.

What Is A Tanning Oil?

Tanning oils or tanning lotions are designed to enhance a tan by amplifying the effects of ultraviolet rays. They work by incorporating ingredients that promote the production of melanin (the skin’s pigment) or increase the blood flow to the skin, thereby increasing the amount of melanin that is brought to the top layers of the skin. Some deliver moisturizing ingredients or antioxidants as well.

With what we now know about ultraviolet light, sun damage and skin cancer, it’s surprising that tanning oils are still around. However, a recent visit to the sun care aisle of a large drugstore uncovered a large assortment of bottles claiming to help you achieve a sexy, bronzed look (with the help of the sun or a tanning bed, of course). Keep in mind that most tanning oils do not offer any sun protection and if they do, it’s minimal at best.

There’s nothing like healthy, smooth skin, but a tanning oil isn’t going to help with that look. Whether gained via the sun or a tanning bed, a tan is the result of skin damage and will not only age your skin faster, but also increase your risk for skin cancer. If you’re out in the sun, cover up, seek shade or wear a good UVA/UVB blocking sunscreen. If it’s the bronzed look that you’re after, then consider the safe option and opt for a self tanning product. Your skin will thank you.

Here are two self tanning products to consider:
Neostrata Natural Insta-Tan – This 2 in 1 bronzer plus self tanning product is suitable for all skin types.
La Roche Posay Authohelios – Imparts an even, healthy, natural look.
