Dark Armpits: 5 Ways To Treat

You are currently viewing Dark Armpits: 5 Ways To Treat

Dark armpits are more common than you may suspect and if you have them, they can be embarrassing.

Here are 5 top tips to combat them:

  1. Exfoliate. The darkness may be caused by an excess of dead skin cells that may be trapped in the tiny folds in your armpits. Use an exfoliating product to help remove the skin cells. One that contains lactic acid – like Lac-Hydrin – is gentle yet effective.
  2. Stop Shaving. A fast and convenient way to remove underarm hair, shaving cuts hair off at the surface, leaving residual hair just beneath, which can result in dark armpits. Try waxing instead.
  3. Switch Products. A sensitivity to fragrances or other ingredients in your deodorant or anti-perspirant may be the cause of your dark armpits. Change products or opt for ones without scent to see if this helps to lighten things up.
  4. Skin Lightening Agents. An excess build-up of melanin may be the culprit. And while, the underarm area isn’t a common one for this to occur, it is still possible. Check with a skin care specialist first to see if a skin lightening agent may help.
  5. Seek Medical Attention. A medical condition called acanthosis nigricans results in dark markings on the neck, under the arms or groin and your physician may help to diagnose the condition. It tends to be associated with being overweight and may be related to elevated insulin levels. Retinoids (as in Green Cream), 20% urea (Uremol 20) or alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) including lactic acid may be effective on your dark armpits.
