Niacinamide and Skin: A Review

You are currently viewing Niacinamide and Skin: A Review

We posted about niacinamide (Vitamin B3) a few years ago , but it seems to be increasingly included as an ingredient in your skin care products. A good time for a review….

Niacinamide is one of the two main forms of vitamin B3 (nicotinic acid is the other) and it helps to facilitate enzymatic reactions in the body. These involve activities such as the metabolism of glucose, cellular energy production and the synthesis of lipids. Additionally, niacinamide appears to have some antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

When applied topically, niacinamide has been shown to increase ceramide and free fatty acid levels in skin, prevent skin from losing water content, and stimulate microcirculation in the dermis. It is used to:

  • Improve skin elasticity
  • Enhance skin barrier function, leading to increased hydration
  • Aid in the elimination of skin discolorations and
  • Restore a healthy tone and texture to skin.

Niacinamide and Acne

Niacinamide has demonstrated efficacy in treating acne. In a randomized controlled study, a 4% niacinamide gel was compared to 1% clindamycin antibiotic gel in 76 patients with moderate acne. After 8 weeks, 82% of patients treated with niacinamide and 68% of those treated with clindamycin showed an improvement. Neither group experienced side effects.

Niacinamide and Rosacea

Rosacea is a condition associated with excessive skin redness, irritability, sensitivity and inflammation.  Niacinamide has been shown to improve skin barrier function in rosacea patients, leading to diminished reaction to irritants, such as detergents. Further research is needed.

The evidence to support the use of niacinamide in skin care is increasing so it’s certainly an ingredient worth considering. Find it in new Apothekari A is for Anti-Aging Retinal Serum , where it is included for a number of anti-aging benefits. Niacinamide is also a key ingredient in the Olay Professional line.

What has been your experience with niacinamide?

Niacinamide makes my skin flush a bit. But I have rosacea so it easily flushes anyway.
