Darker skin ages differently to lighter skin. And that’s because the pigment found in darker skin affords more protection against ultraviolet rays than lighter skin. Bear in mind that while the additional melanin (pigment) does act as a natural sunscreen, studies have cited that it delivers an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) rating of between 1 and 4.

For this reason, all skin types, even darker ones, are susceptible to sun damage, including wrinkles, age spots, hyperpigmentation and sagging skin. Experts recommend the daily use of a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen daily, year round to counter the effect of sun damage.
