4 Spring Fashion Trends for 2011

Every March I eagerly anticipate the arrival of InStyle, People –Style Watch (fabulous mag!), and Vogue to see what’s Hot and what’s Not for this season.  For those of you that share my mild obsession, I’m sure you will agree that more often than not we are left feeling overwhelmed and confused.  One magazine says to embrace our wild child with bright colours and bold stripes while another tells us to be cool and chic in our white on white with nude accents.  Which is it?!

As a fashion buyer I must anticipate trends well before these magazines come out which adds a whole other dimension to deciphering not only what will be hot for the season but what will women want to wear.  In light of our ever-challenging economy I feel it’s very important to try and work in our existing wardrobe with new trends.  We’ve invested in our fashion pieces and it’s ridiculous to only be able to wear them for one season.  The idea is to freshen up your closet.  These are my picks for the hottest of the hot this spring:

1. 70’s Inspired Looks

I think I’m hearing an audible “nooo…not again” but the idea is to add just one look not head to toe hippy-girl.  Peasant blouses in a soft print are so lovely but you could add a cool belt to give it a more modern feel.  Wide bottom jeans are definitely back but you might want to skip the ultra-high waist we’re seeing on the runway (ohh Farrah).  I would also opt for a cute ballet flat rather than a high wedge.

2. Stripes

Nautical is hot but I do love stripes that mix unexpected colours (like a bold mix of orange and hot pink or more understated with grey and yellow)

3. Bright Colours

Slip on your sunglasses and grab the brightest hues you can find of orange, pink, green, and blue.  And don’t be afraid to mix them together…matchy-matchy is definitely out.

4. Prints and Florals

It is the season to have fun with gorgeous prints and get flirty with pretty florals.  This is such a great way to utilize the great basics you might already have in your closet.  Those skinny cargo’s you coughed up a mortgage payment for last year will pair perfectly with a soft floral blouse this spring.

If there was a theme to spring 2011 it would be “girls just wanna have fun”.  You don’t have to ditch your classic pieces or your sea of black but this season you can feel free to embrace that side or you that craves to be more fun, flirty, pretty, or wild.  And even if you’re just grabbing a latte at your favourite local coffee spot or a glass of wine with your girlfriend, rock a look.

Why do we so often wait for a special occasion to bring out the good stuff?  When you wear something that makes you feel beautiful, I guarantee your day will immediately feel a little more special.
