Raspberry ketone, the chemical responsible for the aroma of this popular berry, has recently been promoted as a miracle fat loss agent. On what is this claim based, and is it valid?

One Japanese study reveals that, when given in high doses to mice, raspberry ketone has been shown to prevent high-fat, diet-induced elevations in body weight. Scientists believe that the ketone works by altering the body’s metabolism, increasing norepinephrine levels and thereby increasing the rate at which fat is used by the body.

However, no clinical studies have been carried out in human subjects. It should also be noted that the dose given is so high as to be impractical for human consumption. And, as raspberry ketone is also one of the most expensive natural compounds on the market (up to $20,000 per kg), the treatment is not likely to be affordable for most of us.

Canadian scientists have advised that the elevated stress levels associated with raspberry ketones could do more harm to your body than good. Once again, folks, it all boils down to the basics: eat a healthy diet and enjoy physical activity. But you knew that already, right?
