DIY Skin Care: Dos and Don’ts

You are currently viewing DIY Skin Care: Dos and Don’ts

In a time when we all try to make our dollar stretch further it should come as no surprise that many of us engage in DIY (do it yourself), including DIY skin care. Whether you’ve already taken matters into your own hands or are contemplating subjecting your face to what’s in your fridge, you shouldn’t necessarily believe everything you read on the internet.

A recent article, based on the expertise of a New York dermatologist, summarizes some of the main dos and don’ts of DIY skin care.

Dos

  1. Honey. Its antiseptic properties can help preserve homemade concoctions and it can also help dry skin.
  2. Aloe. Great for treating wounds and skin irritation.
  3. Oils. Coconut and olive oil are excellent gentle hydrating ingredients.
  4. Exfoliants. Standard pantry fare – salt and sugar – make excellent exfoliants. Baking soda too.
  5. Tea. Good for more than your afternoon cuppa, tea is an excellent source of antioxidants.
  6. Yogurt. Cleopatra may have soaked in milk, but dairy can spoil on your skin. Instead reach for the yogurt, which delivers sufficient lactic acid to make a difference.

Don’ts

  1. Vinegar. Yes it can deodorize, but it stinks. Nobody wants to smell like a salad.
  2. Egg whites. They may help tighten skin, but carry the risk of salmonella, which you could ingest accidentally.
  3. Spices. Sure they taste great, but spices can be highly irritating to skin when applied topically.
  4. Citrus. The sour taste comes from acid, which can irritate skin. In particular avoid citrus on the lips, which are especially sensitive.
