Summer Camp Essentials

Besides back-to-school, the most wonderful time of the year, and I know I’m not alone here, is when the teens go off to summer camp.  Children get to experience new activities, meet new friends and develop skills that will last a lifetime.  At home, parents are savoring the break as well.  It’s a win-win situation all around.

Although being apart means we can’t make sure the kids are eating right, brushing their teeth and bathing every day, we can certainly pack some essentials that will make their time away extra-enjoyable:

Dry shampoo:  The greatest invention since sliced bread, dry shampoo is a quick-fix for bad hair days at camp.  With so much fun going on, it may be difficult to schedule in that daily shower.   Dry shampoo is an ingenious solution for fresh hair, especially for tweens and teens.

Micellar cleanser:  Also in the “spot-cleaning” category, a cleanser like Neostrata Micellar Cleanse is perfect for those constantly on the go. Requiring no water or rinsing, micellar cleansers trap oil and dirt on the face for a gentle and uber-convenient way to cleanse the face before bed.  Add a pack of cotton pads and you’re good to go.

Diaper rash cream:  Although the kids are long out of diapers (thankfully!), it’s worth it to send them to camp with a little tube or tin of zinc oxide diaper rash cream for mosquito bites.  A friend told me about this trick a few years ago.  Although it won’t keep the little insects away, diaper rash cream will provide some relief from the itching.

Sunscreen:  Nothing ruins a day outdoors faster than a sun burn.  Pack sunscreen in easy-to-use formulas and keep your fingers crossed that all those years of nagging will kick in.  Anthelios XL SPF 45 Spray, with its dry velvety feel, may be the favorite in terms of finish, but for sheer speed, nothing beats Ombrelle SPF 60 Face Stick.  Plus, it can be used equally on the arms and legs and fits easily into a pocket or backpack.

After Sun Gel:  If it’s a choice between applying sunscreen and having fun, well, fun will win out almost every time, so arm the kids with La Roche Posay Posthelios After Sun Gel.  Formulated with moisturizing shea butter, this soothing and comforting cream will help repair the skin’s protective barrier.  No guarantees, however, that it will get the kids to use sunscreen the next day, unfortunately.

By the time the kids get home, all they will have are happy memories.  And a week’s worth of laundry.
