A vine species native to Paraguay, Brazil and northeastern Argentina, the passion fruit is a round to oval shaped fruit yellow to dark purple in color when mature. Passion fruits contain a soft to firm, juicy interior filled with seeds. They are grown for their juice, which is often added to other fruit juices.
Fresh passion fruit juice contains high amounts of beta carotene, potassium and dietary fiber. It is also a good source of Vitamin C. Polyphenols, which act as antioxidants and can help to fight free radical damage, have also been found in the passion fruit. An oil, which may be extracted from the passion flower, is high in essential fatty acids making it possibly useful in the management of dry skin.
While a fruit known more for consumption because it tastes devine, you can find skin care products incorporating the passion fruit. Crushed passion fruit seeds may be added to scrubs for their exfoliating benefits delivering smooth, soft skin. As well, studies have shown the seeds may inhibit melanogenesis in melanoma cells.
More research is welcome on this exotic fruit, but it does make skin care fun!
