There’s a popular misconception in skincare that if something is natural it must therefore be better. And you’ll find many natural and/or organic skincare manufacturers only too willing to perpetuate this myth.
The truth is that not all things synthetic are bad. In fact, many important skin care ingredients are more effective in their synthetic form. Still others retain the same chemical composition as its cousin found in nature. Synthetic ingredients may deliver more benefit to skin than those that are natural. In addition, the synthetic form may be more stable, more easily able to penetrate the skin and create longer lasting results than the natural form.
Don’t write-off a product based on synthetic ingredients just because they aren’t natural. Consider that chemical sunscreens (Mexoryl SX, Mexoryl XL) are sun filters that retain their stability for hours after application. Vitamin C as L-ascorbic acid is significantly more stable than Vitamin C straight from nature.
The bottom line? Judge a product on whether it contains safe and effective ingredients that are backed up by science. The concentration of its active ingredients and its formulation are far more important than whether its ingredients are synthetic or natural.
