Summer and Melasma

You are currently viewing Summer and Melasma

Melasma is a skin condition typified by patches of hyperpigmented (darkened skin). Often referred to as the mask of pregnancy, it’s not exactly certain what causes it – hormones, sun exposure, skin coloring (medium skin tones) and a genetic susceptibility are thought to be implicated.

Summer can be challenging if you have melasma since UV exposure stimulates the production of melanin (skin pigment). Therefore, sun protection is a must – although not just in the summer, but year round. This is a situation where you can’t possibly wear too much sunscreen. Try combining two together especially in areas most affected by melasma. For example, put on a product like Anthelios Creme SPF 50+ followed by Colorescience Sunforgettable SPF 30. The combination of chemical plus physical blocking sunscreens deliver optimal protection.

Remember to reapply sunscreen if you are out for any extended period of time. Wear hats, long sleeves and stick to shade especially during the sun’s peak hours.

You can keep melasma in check over the summer, but diligence is required.
