Algae Extract And Your Skin

You are currently viewing Algae Extract And Your Skin

Algae extract is derived from algae, a large and diverse group of simple plant-like organisms, which are prominent in bodies of water, but may also be found in other environments including snow and ice.  Algae have a number of applications, including their use as:

  • Food (Seaweed, for example)
  • Biofuel (as energy)
  • Fertilizer
  • Pollution control
  • Pigments
  • Plastics

You may now find algae extract in a range of skin care formulations where it is often included as an active substance to help moisturize the skin and leave it feeling smooth and supple.

There isn’t tons of clinical evidence regarding the use of algae extract in skin care products, but it’s thought that it works by inhibiting the formation of an enzyme which causes the degradation of collagen. Additionally, it is rich in antioxidants, which can help to protect skin against free radical damage.

Recent studies (although none published in any important journal) show that algae extract is rich in a compound called alguronic acid, shown to increase cell regeneration and the synthesis of elastin (it gives skin its elasticity of youth). More studies, in real people, are needed to confirm these effects. Alguronic acid is thought to also provide protection against cell damage induced by ultraviolet rays and inhibit enzymes that break down elastin.

Look for algae extract in apothekari antioxidant firming eye gel where it helps protect the delicate eye area from free radicals and helps boost collagen production.
