Sugar For Skin: The Good

Sugar for skin, especially when combined with the word ‘good’, may sound like an odd choice for a blog post. Sugar has become a dietary evil and we know that in addition to it leading to weight gain, its over consumption has also been associated with a host of health issues including diabetes and heart disease. In a previous post we discussed the disadvantages of sugar for skin.

While its consumption may not be good for your health or your skin, when used topically there are some benefits associated with using sugar for skin care:

  1. Sugar Exfoliates. Sugar makes an excellent exfoliant and if you opt for finer granules in your polishes or scrubs, it can do this quite gently leaving your skin looking and feeling soft and smooth.
  2. Sugar Can Help Clear Skin. The gentle exfoliation delivered by sugar helps removes dead skin cells, which can clog pores. Sugar polishes helps to remove these, and can help to reduce breakouts and blemishes.
  3. Sugar Helps Soften Skin. As a result of its exfoliating action, sugar polishes and scrubs can help to reduce callouses on the heels and soles of the feet and soften elbows and knees.

While I may not recommend using sugar polishes on your face, because there are better and more gentle options such as alpha hydroxy acids, I’m a big fan of the benefits of sugar for skin on the body. It only takes a few additional minutes but the process of applying a sugar polish like our Lemon Verbena or Vanilla Rose in my morning shower is luxurious and makes me feel quite special indeed. It’s a little bit of pampering before I get on with my day.

What about you? Are you a fan of sugar for skin in your routine?
