Summer is ubiquitous with hot weather. And as much as you may love the heat, keeping cool often means finding refuge in watering holes such as swimming pools, lakes, or the ocean. If you want to keep protected from UV rays, you’ll want to make sure that you select a water resistant sunscreen.
When looking for a water resistant sunscreen, you’ll be hard pressed to find one that doesn’t instruct you to reapply every 2 hours – more frequently if swimming or perspiring. The reason? Despite how photo-stable (stability upon exposure to light) the ingredients may be, water is going to wash anything off your skin. And, many of us just don’t apply enough sunscreen. Reapplication ensures that skin gets adequate protection over time.
Waterproof vs Water Resistant Sunscreens?
Read more about the difference between water resistant and waterproof sunscreens here. The term waterproof on a sunscreen is misleading; there is truly no such thing as a waterproof sunscreen. You’ll still find sunscreens labelled as being waterproof, but trying to formulate a pleasing product is not possible given current technology. In fact, the FDA has recommended that manufacturers stop using the term waterproof to describe sunscreen. The recommendation is to use the terms water resistant or highly water resistant. Water resistant products give you 40 minutes in the water; highly water resistant, 80 minutes.
Whether you’ll be swimming, biking or hiking, choose from a range of water resistant sunscreens here. The most highly water resistant sunscreen that we carry is Anthelios W SPF 30 Gel.
