Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme that is also a potent antioxidant. Different types of SODs are found in human skin cells including the dermis and epidermis; they help to protect against free radical damage and are important in the production of healthy skin cells. For this reason, you may find superoxide dismutase in a range of cosmetic products.
In skin care, it is thought that superoxide dismutase minimizes the cell damage that is caused by ultraviolet radiation. However, this is theoretical and there are few studies demonstrating this advantage. It is also thought that because superoxide dismutase helps to reduce free radical damage that it may be a promising anti aging skin care ingredient. It may work by helping to maintain healthy collagen and elastin levels, thereby minimizing the tendency to develop fine lines and wrinkles.
Superoxide dismutase holds a lot of promise as a skin beneficial ingredient. At this time, however, more studies and research are needed to validate the promise it holds.
