Flaxseeds: Good For Skin

You are currently viewing Flaxseeds: Good For Skin

Flaxseeds, the seed of the flax plant have recently become recognized for a range of health benefits. You may know that flax provides the raw material for linen. And, it delivers a host of other advantages as well.

Flaxseeds contain alpha linoleic acid, an omega 3 fatty acid. Omega 3 fatty acids are one of a group of fatty acids called essential fatty acids because they cannot be produced by the body and must be obtained by consuming foods rich with them or by supplementing. Studies have shown that omega 3 fatty acids are helpful in reducing cholesterol levels. Flaxseeds also contain lignans, a type of phytoestrogen (a plant derived ingredient that carries the beneficial actions of estrogen without the side effects), which may help to protect against some types of cancers.

When it comes to skin care, studies have shown that the consumption of omega 3 fatty acids can help to improve eczema. The topical application of flaxseed oil can help to lock in moisture and improve dry, dull complexions. This may be attributed to the fact that omega-3 fatty acids possess anti-inflammatory action, helping to minimize redness and skin irritation.
