Wild yam (Dioscorea villosa) is a species of a vine that grows wild and is native to North America. It has been used widely in herbal medicine to treat pain and inflammation, ease childbirth and manage menstrual cramps.
Rich in phyto (plant) hormone, Wild yam contains diosgenin, a compound that is used to manufacture progesterone and other hormones in the lab. The body is unable to convert diosgenin to progesterone or other hormones on its own. Wild Yam may be included in cosmetics for its phyto-hormone components. And while manufacturers may claim that it possesses anti-aging benefits including the ability to reduce wrinkles and fine lines, evidence is lacking.
More clinical studies would be welcome before giving Wild Yam a firm thumbs up.
