According to an article in the Globe and Mail, a new report finds traces of heavy metals in many cosmetics. Lead in your lipstick? Mercury in your mascara? Cadmium in your concealer? Unfortunately, the answer may be yes.
The study, commissioned by Environmental Defense, a national advocacy group, found during testing that the products contained an average of four of the eight metals being screened for. All products had at least two metals present. Only trace amounts were detected in the majority of products tested leaving many to question whether we should be concerned at all.
Health Canada prohibits companies from deliberately adding metals such as cadmium or lead to cosmetics but because they are naturally occurring, they can end up in products unintentionally.
