A new study out of Rutgers University suggests that you may get the most benefit from your morning cup of coffee by slathering it on your skin rather than by drinking it. The study strengthens the theory that caffeine offers protection against certain skin cancers by helping to prevent damage caused by ultraviolet light.

The focus now is on the topical application of caffeine. Although studies have linked caffeinated beverages with a significant decrease in several different types of cancers, researchers aren’t sure why. It’s theorized that caffeine works by inhibiting an enzyme, acting as a sunscreen and by absorbing damaging UV light.
