You may be confused about how to select Anthelios Sunscreen that is right for your needs. Not all Anthelios products contain these ingredients and many newer ones contain older sun filtering agents that don’t work in the same way. This article only pertains to Anthelios sunscreens containing Mexoryl SX and/or XL. Read labels carefully….
We get calls every day from customers asking us why La Roche Posay’s Anthelios is such a great product. With so many sunscreens on the market vying for your hard earned dollars, that’s a valid question. There are reasons why dermatologists recommend Anthelios to their patients and why discerning customers choose it over any other sunblock protection. But should you spend your money to buy Anthelios and does it really deserve to be called the best sunscreen in the world? |
UVA and UVB rays
It’s important to first understand how the sun’s rays can cause skin damage. The sun is made up of shorter length UVB rays and longer length UVA rays. UVB rays are responsible for tanning and sunburns; UVA rays on the other hand, penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to wrinkles, premature aging, allergic reactions and some types of skin cancers. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is a measurement of the amount of UVB protection that a sunscreen delivers. As yet, there isn’t an official standard for measuring the UVA protection of a sunscreen. An effective sunscreen then, should offer protection against both UVA and UVB rays and should remain stable when exposed to sunlight.
How Anthelios works
The Anthelios sunscreens that we stock at PhaMix contain the ingredients Mexoryl SX or Mexoryl XL, which offer considerable UVA and UVB protection. When combined with other effective sun filtering agents such as titanium dioxide, avobenzone, octocrylene or Tinosorb S, for example, Anthelios becomes a broad spectrum sunscreen delivering protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Many sunscreens on the market only deliver UVB protection. So you may not get a sunburn, but you won’t be protecting yourself against skin aging and skin cancers. The Anthelios formulation is also highly photostable (doesn’t degrade when exposed to sunlight) compared to most sunscreens on the market today. Studies have shown that it maintains the majority of its sun filtering capability even 24 hours after initial application.
Why should you buy Anthelios?
If the fact that Anthelios provides you with excellent UVA and UVB protection, is photostable and that it lasts isn’t enough to convince you to buy Anthelios over any other sunscreen, then this might. Anthelios is luxuriously formulated into cosmetically elelgant lotions and creams that feel great on the skin. The texture is far more pleasant than any other sunscreen we’ve ever tried. That’s a reason why many of our customers return to PhaMix to buy Anthelios.
Anthelios with Mexoryl SX or Mexoryl XL?
Mexoryl SX has been available in popular suncreens in Canada and Europe for about 15 years and is an effective UVA and UVB filter and is water soluble. It may also be found in the moisturizer Anthelios SX which offers an SPF of 15, in the US.
Mexoryl XL has just recently been approved by Health Canada and is an oil soluble form of the Mexoryl molecule allowing for formulations that are more water resistant than products containing only the Mexoryl SX molecule. In addition to being oil soluble, Mexoryl XL protects against a broader spectrum of the UVA range, offering you greater protection against UVA rays – the ones responsible for premature aging, leathery, sagging skin as well as some types of skin cancers.
Many Anthelios products contain both Mexoryl XL as well as Mexoryl SX, a combination that increases the effectiveness of UVA protection. Since products with Mexoryl XL are available, it makes sense to opt for products with Mexoryl XL wherever possible. The result is a suncreen with the ultimate in sun protection.
Several Anthelios sunscreens now contain La Roche Posay’s patented formulation with the added benefit of Tinosorb S. Tinosorb S is a stable sun filter that blocks both UVA and UVB rays and also helps to increase the stability and effectiveness of other chemical sun filters. You can find Tinosorb S in Anthelios XL 50+ Comfort Cream, Anthelios XL 50+ Ultra-Light Fluid Tinted & Untinted, Anthelios XL 50+ Lait, Anthelios XL BB Cream, Anthelios KA,, Anthelios XL 50+ Gel Cream, and La Roche Posay Hydraphase UV.
