Pearl powder is a preparation made from crushed pearls and used widely in Asia for skin care. In traditional Chinese medicine, pearl powder is used to fight inflammation and as a detoxification agent. It is also taken internally as a relaxant.
Made from either freshwater or saltwater pearls, pearl powder is rich in amino acids, minerals, calcium carbonate crystals and the protein conchiolin. Conchiolin delivers pearls’ radiant shine. When applied topically it is said to have skin benefits including the treatment of acne and usefulness as a skin lightening agent. It is well tolerated by sensitive skin types.
There is some anecdotal evidence to support the claims attributed to pearl powder including slowing the development of melanin (skin’s pigment), reducing skin discoloration and lightening uneven skin tone. It may also help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. However, studies to support these benefits are lacking and confirmation is required before recommending it for any of these skin issues.
