Spring was in the air and last month as I embarked on a push to finish off with house decorating that had taken a back seat for years (I know, I know…) I found myself convincing my husband that we had to sell our house.
The lack of an enclosed office had left our living and dining areas in a perpetually dishevelled state, almost always. I have to confess that when it comes to maintaining an office that neither my husband nor I are the tidiest of sorts. We really do require closed doors. Unfortunately, our open concept house (which we love), was unable to accommodate a closed door office without completely ruining the space we’d created.
If we sold, surely we’d find something suitable? We were open to a range of possibilities as long as it was in (or close to) our current neighbourhood. After an exhausting week of prepping our house for sale, we received and accepted an offer directly after our first open house weekend. Exciting!
The excitement of selling soon faded as we realized that there was little for us to buy. Overpriced shacks (this is Vancouver after all) left us with the possibility of a major renovation (think gutting an entire house or even a floor addition). Or we could put all our belongings into storage and rent until something suitable turned up. I didn’t want to contemplate the latter – imagine putting an entire family’s stuff, accumulated over a period of seven years – into storage. The thought gave me the shivers.
My husband, the voice of reason when it comes to real estate decisions, convinced me that renting made sense. Why buy something out of desperation, only to regret it later? A small part of me believes that we’ll still find something move in ready before our move out date in a month. Overly optimistic, I know. The realistic in me knows that on May 30th I’ll be directing a move into our new rental home. If you see me lifting boxes, come say hello. Better yet, help me move them!
Thank you for sharing 🙂
