A new study published in the Journal Emotion, suggests that Botox, in addition to paralyzing facial muscles, may also deaden one’s real emotions.
Facial expressions appear to play a role in how your emotions develop and not just in how they are displayed for others to see. They are thought to influence emotional experiences via a feedback loop. This suggests that Botox, then, not only changes one appearance, but also seems to dampen real emotions.
The muscle paralysis that comes with Botox isolates the effects of facial expression along with the subsequent sensory feedback to the brain that can influence our emotions. Individuals will be able to respond normally to emotional events such as a sad movie, but will experience less movement of the facial muscles treated with Botox. The result is less feedback to the brain about the facial expressions.
