Researchers in Taiwan recently reported that active ingredients derived from the evergreen bush Cinnamomum subavenium, provide safer and more effective skin lightening benefits than currently available treatments. It might just give new hope to individuals wanting treatment for Melasma, age spots and other hyperpigmentation disorders.
Two chemicals found in the Cinnamomum plant can block tyrosinase (the enzyme responsible for the production of melanin). These enzymes were tested on the embryos of zebrafish, a species that contains highly visible bands of black pigment. Within four days, exposure to low levels of the chemicals reduced melanin production by almost 50%, turning the embryos snowy white.
Researchers estimate that the chemicals from Cinnamomum subavenium are 100 times more effective than traditional skin lightening agents including kojic acid and arbutin. As well, they did not seem to have any toxic effects when tested in low doses on cultured human skin and zebrafish embryos. Patents have been applied for and a cream based on the active ingredients could be available in as little as a year.
Cinnamomum subavenium could possibly provide a well tolerated, effective and natural alternative to skin lightening actives on the market today.
I am interested in finding out where I would be able to purchase this new product once it is available. Can you tell me where I may purchase it? and when it will be available to the public?
Thank You

For Ernest: We don’t yet know of any products containing Cinnamomum subavenium for a natural alternative to skin lightening products. The best alternative available today is La Roche Posay Mela D, which derives its active ingredients from a fungal life form produced in the manufacture of rice wine. We’ll be watching for the ingredient Cinnamomum subavenium, however — and if it proves effective, we’ll be carrying it.
Has any skin lightening products with cinnamomun subavenium come to the market yet?
