When winter hits, our hair care needs change just as they do for the skin on our face and body. The freezing temperatures outside and the drying heat inside can deplete moisture and leave your strands parched and uncontrollable.
Naturally, there are steps we can take to fight the flyaways and the high-static hair:
- Use a Moisturizing Serum on Dry Hair. Apothekari Wild Crafted Argan Oil works a treat to smooth the hair, give it great shine and cut down on static. Argan oil also does double duty as a leave-in conditioner when applied to towel-dried hair. This liquid gold also helps with the brittle ends that tend to break.
- Choose Your Conditioner Carefully. Look for a conditioner containing ingredients that will lock in moisture, like panthenol. Go one step further by choosing a shampoo and conditioner based on your particular hair type.
- Treat Yourself to a Weekly Deep Conditioning Mask. Make replenishing your hair’s moisture a part of your weekly routine. For those of you who like to DIY, mix 1 Tbs each coconut oil and honey, massage into the ends of the hair and leave for 20 relaxing minutes before rinsing out with warm water.
- Don’t Overdo It. Just like the skin on our face and our body, our scalp can also get dry and scaly in the winter months. Over-shampooing can exacerbate the itching and flakes. Shampoo less often if possible. With the abundance of dry shampoos on the market now, skipping a day (or two!) is easier than ever. If dandruff is an issue, a dedicated dandruff shampoo containing ketoconazole, selenium sulfide or antifungal tea tree oil may alleviate those annoying flakes.
- See Your Hairdresser Regularly. The ends of your hair are the oldest and tend to be the driest. A regular trim will get rid of split ends.
- Stick to Warm or Tepid Water. Hot water can dry it out your hair, just like it can for the skin.
- Invest in a Humidifier. This is our top tip. Central heating in winter can lower the humidity in the home to below 10%. Normal humidity is usually in the range of 30%-50%, so you can appreciate why your skin and hair feel devoid of moisture during the colder months. It’s like being on a long flight without the payoff of a sunny holiday at the end of it, and nobody wants that.
