If you’re concerned about your health, you probably watch what you eat, following a healthy diet low in sodium. A new study, however, may have you rethinking your salt intake. The study, published in the reputable journal JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, questions whether there’s really any benefit for individuals with normal blood pressure to cut back on salt in their diet.
The study found that people who ate lots of salt were no more likely to develop high blood pressure than those with a low salt intake. And, they were also less likely to die of heart disease. In fact, people in the study who ate the least amount of sodium actually had slightly higher death rates from heart disease.
The study authors emphasize that reducing salt intake is still important for those with high blood pressure. Their findings “do not support the current recommendations of a generalized and indiscriminate reduction of salt intake” among healthy people.
