Already in use elsewhere in the world, an early cancer detection tool known as MoleMate is now approved for use in Canada.
MoleMate technology features a hand held scanner which allows physicians to gain information about moles without invasive, expensive and painful procedures such as biopsy. The scanner enables the healthy professional to scan the area of skin about 2mm below suspicious moles on the patient’s body, providing information which is vital in assessing whether treatment is required. The device is expected to result in fewer serious cases of melanoma and other skin cancers.
Each year, there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostrate, lung and colon. Cancers detected early, before the tumor has penetrated the skin, carry a survival rate of about 99 percent. The survival rate falls to 15 percent for those with advanced skin cancer.
