If you’ve ever experienced a sunburn, you’ll know that it’s not much fun.
The swelling and pain that accompany a sunburn are a result of skin damage, which can be avoided with a few simple actions:
- Stay out of the sun during its peak hours between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm
- Seek shade when you can’t avoid the sun
- Cover up with hats, sunglasses and loose clothing
- Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30
If you are one of the more than 1/3 of adults who get a sunburn this year, treat it with over the counter painkiller such as ibuprofen, cool compresses and aloe. Anesthetic sprays and hydrocortisone creams may be advised for more serious burns.
